According to shocking claims, Cristiano Ronaldo informed fellow Portugal player Bruno Fernandes that Manchester United “ought” to win the Premier League title this season.
After cutting short his international duties with Portugal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner arrived at Manchester airport on Thursday evening.
With his second-half brace against the Republic of Ireland in Portugal’s World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, Ronaldo set a new international goal scoring record.
However, the Manchester United player was booked late in the game and will miss Portugal’s forthcoming World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan.
Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to leave Portugal’s international duty early by manager Fernando Santos, with the ex-Juventus forward in line to make his second United debut against Newcastle at Old Trafford on September 11th.
Ronaldo signed a dramatic deadline-day comeback to United to “close unfinished business” after leaving Old Trafford in 2009 to join Real Madrid.
According to the Sun, the Portugal captain has spoken with his new United teammate Fernandes and expressed his ambition to win the league title once more.
“The players are ecstatic about Ronaldo’s arrival,” a source told the publication. They’ve been given a great lift and now have a lot of confidence.
“The players and coaching staff now believe they have the finest group in the Premier League and can win it this season.
“Ronaldo also spoke with Bruno Fernandes and instructed him to inform the other players that they must win this year.
“They must put in the effort and begin to believe in themselves. Since Ronaldo’s signing, the players haven’t stopped talking about him, and they can’t wait to practice and play with him.
“To them, he’s like a god. The club is energized right now, from the fans to the players to the tea lady at the training field.
“Many of the staff members who looked after Ronaldo when he first joined at the club as a bashful youngster are still there, and they are excited to see him.
“Everyone is proud of what he has accomplished in his career, and they will be overjoyed if he can return Old Trafford to its former glory.”
After Edinson Cavani donned the No 21 shirt following Dan James’ deadline-day transfer to Leeds, Ronaldo will once again wear United’s legendary No 7 shirt.
United paid £12.9 million for the former Real Madrid star’s transfer from Juventus, with add-ons potentially raising the price to £6.9 million.
