Suarez to miss Uruguay World Cup qualifiers with knee issue

(Reuters) – MADRID, Aug 30 (Reuters) – Luis Suarez of Atletico Madrid will miss Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers next month due to a knee injury, the Spanish club announced on Monday.

Suarez was set to join up with his national squad for games against Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador after scoring in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal before being substituted.

“A considerable edema was found on the posterior area of the player’s left knee during the MRI examination,” Atletico said in a statement.

“The Uruguayan Federation has been informed by the club’s medical services, and the player has been ruled out of the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.”

Suarez follows Edinson Cavani of Manchester United on the list of players who have withdrawn after the Uruguayan Federation rescinded the forward’s call-up earlier on Monday.

The British government turned down FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s request for a quarantine exemption for players returning from red-list countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to withdrawals and compromise agreements between clubs and national associations.
