LONDON, England (AP) – Kurt Zouma, a French center back, was signed by West Ham from Chelsea on Saturday in a move valued roughly $35 million.
Zouma, who won two Premier League crowns and a Champions League trophy with Chelsea, is the type of player West Ham boss David Moyes was seeking for to bolster his defense.
“My talk with the manager moved at a breakneck pace,” Zouma explained. “I simply got the impression that he really wanted me to come and join the squad, especially because it’s a good team that’s off to a great start this season.
“West Ham had a terrific season last year, which gave the club a lot of confidence to progress this year — and I want to assist the team in doing so.”
With the added pressure of being in the Europa League, Moyes was eager to strengthen to his team.
“He is a player we have been following for some time, and we have worked very hard to make the transfer happen,” Moyes added. “He was always our top choice, and I’m thrilled that he’s now our player,” says the coach.
“Kurt will join a team consisting of hungry and ambitious athletes. Our team will be put to the test by him. He’s a robust, powerful player with plenty of Premier League experience, and he’s also a terrific age for a center back.”
With two victories and a draw in the league, West Ham has had a solid start to the season.
