West Brom 0-6 Arsenal: Report

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick as we cruised into the Carabao Cup third round with a 6-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night.

Our captain, making his first start of the season, took home the matchball after a typically clinical performance in front of goal on a near-perfect evening in which Aaron Ramsdale marked his Gunners debut with some fine saves and a clean sheet, and Martin Odegaard celebrated his return with a glorious backheel assist.

Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka, and Alexandre Lacazette added to the tally against a young Baggies team that had some great chances of their own but couldn’t match Aubameyang’s attacking flair.

Auba gave West Brom an early warning as he got in behind and took the ball out of play before crossing for Pepe to score from close range.

After Alex Palmer pushed Saka’s early effort into his path, the hosts fell behind after 17 minutes, with Aubameyang tapping in from close range.

Midway through the half, Odegaard came close to adding a second, striking the post from a tight angle, while Palmer sprang from his goal to prevent Aubameyang from taking the ball around the goalkeeper after accelerating clear of the hosts’ inexperienced backline.

Despite Arsenal’s occasional threats, it appeared that West Brom’s young side would go into the interval only a goal down. Aubameyang has arrived. Pepe was sent clear by Mohamed Elneny’s slide-rule pass, and Auba was once again perfectly placed to finish from close range despite being blocked by the goal frame.

Arsenal still had time to add a third goal before the interval, with Aubameyang acrobatically teeing up Pepe to sweep home from inside the six-yard box after another lightning quick burst.

A rampaging Arsenal added a fourth goal barely five minutes after the restart. Odegaard took center stage, brilliantly backheeling the ball to the onrushing Saka, who converted clinically after Aubameyang had smartly left the ball in an offside position.

Aubameyang finished his hat-trick in style shortly after the hour mark, curling into the top corner from just inside the area.

Just two minutes after replacing Granit Xhaka, Lacazette finished the scoring by hammering home Pepe’s inviting low cross.

In the final minutes, Ramsdale, who was impressive in his maiden outing, made a great stop from Taylor Gardner-Hickman to give us our first win of the season.

Mikel Arteta fielded a powerful starting XI that contained the likes of Xhaka, Saka, and Pepe from the start.

Lacazette was fit enough to start on the bench, while Sead Kolasinac started at centre half.

Valerien Ismael chose a West Brom team with an average age of just 22, but with experience in the form of Robert Snodgrass, Adam Reach, and Kenneth Zohore.
