On Thursday, the Champions League group stage draw will take place, so who might Manchester City face this season?
After winning the Premier League last season, the Blues will be among the top seeds in the draw, and a total of 26 teams have already qualified for this season’s competition based on their domestic league standings on the continent.
Villarreal, who won the Europa League by defeating Manchester United, are also assured of a spot in the final.
City is in Pot 1 with Chelsea, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Lille, and Sporting Libson, which means they will not be drawn against any of those teams in the group stage. Instead, they will be drawn against teams from Pots 2, 3, and 4.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Borussia Dortmund are all in Pot 2.
City will be pitted against one of those teams, but they will not face Liverpool according to UEFA rules.
This is because at this point, parties from the same country cannot be pitted against each other. Then City will be up against teams from Pots 3 and 4, which have yet to be determined and are now as follows:
Pot 3: Ajax, Leipzig, Atalanta, FC Porto, Zenit.
Pot 4: AC Milan, Wolfsburg.
However, before Thursday’s draw, the clubs that will qualify in the remaining spots in those two Pots will be determined.
On the 14th and 15th of September, the opening games of the Champions League group stage will be played.
