Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea FC: Romelu Lukaku back with a bang as weakened Gunners brushed aside

On Sunday, Tuchel’s Blues defeated a depleted Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates.

Following his club-record £97.5 million reunion with Chelsea, Lukaku was under pressure to deliver, and the Belgian delivered with a brilliant display in a one-sided London derby.

Mikel Arteta would be disappointed to have gone into a game against the Champions League holders with a number of players out with Covid-19, with Ben White joining the list of absentees, but Thomas Tuchel’s Blues, and in particular his new No9, put up a disciplined performance.

Lukaku created and scored the game’s first goal, expertly holding up play and harassing Pablo Mari before converting a Reece James cross from close range 15 minutes into his second Chelsea start.

After Arsenal lost track of James on the right flank, the winger powered home a beautiful finish high past Bernd Leno, the visitors were two goals to the good 20 minutes later.

Arsenal had a lot of heart, but they lacked talent and numbers, and a loss to Chelsea early in the season was never going to define their season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned from his virus, but he could only play 30 minutes from the bench with the game basically finished – and Arteta had also lost Kierney to another injury.

Lukaku could have added his second, and Chelsea’s third, late on, but Arsenal kept the scoreline reasonable thanks to a brilliant stop from Leno.

Despite the fact that it is early in the season, Chelsea are already looking like title contenders, especially with Lukaku leading the charge.

Arsenal, on the other hand, still has a number of players on the way back, although they appear to be a long way behind their London rivals for the time being.
